Frequently Asked Questions
- Q
- Is it true that selecting the wrong carpet cushion might actually void my carpet warranty?
- A
- The right carpet cushion will keep your carpet looking new longer, but it has to be correctly matched to “your” carpet. So, choosing the right carpet cushion is not based on feel alone but also on the recommendation of the carpet manufacturer. In fact, many performance and wear warranties from fibre and carpet producers specify carpet cushion types and thicknesses, and some specify carpet cushion to guard against stretching, delamination and “creeping”.
- Q
- Shouldn’t carpet cushion be free when I purchase my carpet?
- A
- Buyer beware that a free carpet cushion will be of minimum grade and may not provide adequate performance.
- Q
- Should I purchase the thickest carpet cushion that is available to me, for ultimate comfort and performance?
- A
- When buying carpet cushion, remember that a thick cushion will not necessarily perform better. A carpet cushion that is too thick can cause the carpet backing to flex too much, and can make the carpet too soft for comfortable walking and balance. A carpet cushion with medium thickness and a medium to medium-high density is usually best.
- Q
- Is carpet cushion a good investment?
- A
- Good quality carpet cushion helps prevent carpet fibres from matting and crushing. Your carpet will look fresh and new longer. Vacuuming becomes more efficient, thus removing more dust and dirt. Tests have proven that carpet installed over carpet cushion significantly reduces noise. Carpet cushion will also make your carpet feel richer and more luxurious.
- Q
- Can I have my new carpet installed over my old carpet cushion to save money?
- A
- This is not a good idea. You may save the cost of new carpet cushion but it could cost you in both the short and the long term. New carpet cushion provides optimum comfort underfoot. The previous carpet cushion may be reaching the end of its useful life and your new carpet is just beginning to provide its benefits. The existing carpet cushion may look good in some areas, but in heavy traffic areas, it will not provide the benefits that a new carpet deserves.
- Q
- Is it true that if the carpet is directly glued to the sub-floor without carpet cushion, it will be an easier and therefore less expensive installation?
- A
- Carpet cushion absorbs most of the impact of foot traffic. Without it, the carpet pile and backing have to take all the pounding. This cushioning effect can add up to 50% to the life of the carpet so any up front savings will disappear quickly. Carpet cushion definitely creates a more comfortable walking surface, improves insulation and reduces noise. The benefits of a carpet system - cushion AND carpet - far outweigh the direct glue down approach. The direct-glued carpet has a high removal cost.
- Q
- Is carpet cushion environmentally friendly?
- A
- Yes, most carpet cushions are made from post consumer and post industrial materials and are themselves recyclable. In addition, millions of tires are recycled annually into carpet cushion. Many carpet cushions have been "Green Label" approved.
